Coon Rapids Police Department participates in the Crime Free Multi Housing (CFMH) Program. The Crime Free Multi-Housing Program originated in Mesa, Arizona in 1992. Due to its success in Mesa, the program has swept into 27 states and several other countries. The program’s copyrighted logo is being found on more property around the U.S. as its value becomes more widely recognized. Coon Rapids is proud Wellington Ridge Apartments was the 1st fully certified Crime Free Multi-Housing property in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area.
The Coon Rapids Crime Free Multi-Housing Program was created as a partnership between law enforcement and rental property managers to help keep drugs and illegal activity out of their rental property. The program uses a unique 3-part approach with resident friendly techniques applied to maintain crime prevention goals. While CFMH certification cannot guarantee a crime free property it can guarantee management has gone beyond the norm to prevent crime.
Phase 1 involves 9 hours of certification training.
Phase 2 is inspection of the rental property to assure it meets security requirements for certification. Certain requirements must be met for locks on doors and windows, lighting on the property and peepholes in apartment doors, and landscaping trimmed to allow natural surveillance.
Phase 3 involves meeting with residents to discuss crime prevention and to boost community spirit. This is necessary to achieve final certification. Only after a property has completed all phases of the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program can a they display the gold certificate, official signs and use the Crime Free logo in advertising. Each property must re-qualify annually to remain an active member.
