The Coon Rapids City Council has final authority for adopting the annual budget and establishing the property tax levy. City staff members work together with the City Council, to develop a plan that prioritizes City services, while maintaining responsible spending. The budget proposal and preliminary tax levy is discussed with the City Council in August of each year. An approximate timeline of the budget process is as follows:
August - Council reviews proposed budget
September - Council adopts preliminary tax levy and hearing date; City certifies to Anoka County
November - Anoka County mails Truth in Taxation notices
Early December - Truth in Taxation hearing is held
Late December - City certifies levy to the County and State
